It’s Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts, and 30,000 runners are hitting the pavement for the historic 130th Boston Marathon. At TheGymWaves, we know that 26.2 miles is the ultimate test of physical and mental endurance. Whether you’re tracking a loved one or cheering from Heartbreak Hill, here is your high-performance tipsheet for the 2026 race.

How to track your runner?

Don’t rely on text messages—cellular service can be spotty with 500,000 spectators on the course.

  • The BAA Racing App: Download the official BAA Racing App (available on iOS and Android). You can search by name or bib number to follow a “live dot” as your runner hits 5K timing mats.
  • Live Leaderboard: If you’re tracking the pros, the BAA website hosts a live leaderboard for the Elite Men, Elite Women, and Wheelchair divisions.

The 2026 dchedule: the new 6-wave start?

New for this year, the BAA has moved to a six-wave start (up from four) to thin out the crowds.

  • 9:06 AM: Men’s Wheelchair
  • 9:09 AM: Women’s Wheelchair
  • 9:37 AM: Professional Men
  • 9:47 AM: Professional Women
  • 10:00 AM – 11:21 AM: Waves 1 through 6 launch from Hopkinton.
  • 5:30 PM: Official finish line closes on Boylston Street.

Quick tips for spectators

  • The Weather: It’s “brisker” than last week. Expect temperatures in the low-to-mid 40s at the start, reaching the low 50s by the finish. Pro tip: Wear layers. The wind is coming from the Northwest—great for a tailwind for runners, but chilly for those standing still.
  • The Bag Policy: Strict No-Backpack Rule. Avoid bringing any bag larger than 1 gallon. Drones, suitcases, and rolling bags are also prohibited.
  • Free Transport: Skip the traffic. Use the MBTA Green Line for the final miles (note: Copley station is closed). If you’re biking, use Bluebikes code “BCBSEARTHWEEK26” for a $15 credit.

Who to watch: elite highlights

  • Defending Champs: Kenyans John Korir and Sharon Lokedi are back to defend their 2025 titles.
  • The American Hope: Emily Sisson, the North American record holder, is making her highly anticipated Boston debut.
  • The Iron Woman: Keep an eye out for Des Linden. Just 10 days after finishing a 150-mile desert ultra-marathon in the Sahara, she’s back on the Boston course as a non-professional qualifier.

TheGymWaves Verdict: The Boston Marathon isn’t just a race; it’s a metabolic masterpiece. Between the “crowd scientists” optimizing the waves and the elite athletes managing a 26-mile tailwind, today is about efficiency. For spectators, your “marathon” is one of patience and layers. Stay warm, stay hydrated, and enjoy the “sea of joy” at the finish line!

Are you heading to Boylston Street to see the finish, or are you tracking the splits from the couch?
