The regular season marathon is over, and the sprint to the Larry O’Brien Trophy begins now. While the top seeds are resting their legs, the play-in tournament is providing the ultimate “survive and advance” drama. The bracket is nearly set. After high-stakes wins by Philadelphia and Portland, we have our No. 7 seeds. On Friday night, four teams will fight for the final two spots in a “Win or Go Home” finale.

Friday’s Do-or-Die: The Battle for No. 8

Two games remain to decide who faces the top-seeded titans (Detroit and OKC).

• East Storyline: The Charlotte Hornets are riding a wave of momentum after an overtime thriller against Miami. They face an Orlando squad that has to regroup quickly after losing their first play-in chance to Philly.
• West Storyline: A clash of legends. Steph Curry and the Warriors survived the Clippers and now face Kevin Durant and the Suns. One of these veteran-heavy rosters will miss the playoffs entirely.

The First Round: Saturday’s Starting Grid

The playoffs officially begin Saturday with a best-of-seven format. Home-court advantage goes to the team with the better record (hosting Games 1, 2, 5, and 7).

There is a massive physical and psychological “tax” on play-in teams. While the Pistons and Thunder have been focused on active recovery and film study, the teams coming out of Friday night will have played two high-intensity elimination games in 72 hours.

Watch the 76ers vs. Celtics series closely. Philadelphia looked sharp beating Orlando 109-97, but facing a rested Boston squad is a different level of aerobic demand. For the Lakers and Nuggets, health is the only metric that matters—LeBron James and Nikola Jokić are masters of pacing, but the first round is where the “young” teams like Houston and Minnesota will try to push the tempo to induce fatigue.
