Veteran Presence: Kirk Cousins Joins Raiders to Mentor Potential #1 Pick Fernando Mendoza

The Las Vegas Raiders have found their “mature adult.” On Thursday, the Raiders agreed to terms with 14-year veteran Kirk Cousins, reuniting the 37-year-old quarterback with head coach Klint Kubiak. The move provides the Raiders with a proven bridge as they prepare to usher in a new era with the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The signing comes just days after Coach Kubiak expressed a desire to add a veteran leader who can “run the show” while a rookie learns from the sidelines. With the Raiders widely expected to select Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza with the #1 overall pick, Cousins arrives not just to compete, but to stabilize a franchise in transition.

The Kubiak Connection: A Proven Recipe

This isn’t the first time Cousins and Kubiak have shared a sideline. The two spent three seasons together with the Minnesota Vikings (2019-2021), a stretch that saw Cousins produce some of the most efficient numbers of his career:

  • The Vikings Peak: Under Kubiak, Cousins threw for over 12,000 yards and 94 touchdowns.
  • Pro Bowl Form: In 2021, with Kubiak as offensive coordinator, Cousins posted a 103.1 passer rating, proving he could execute Kubiak’s system at an elite level.
  • Familiarity: For a Raiders team needing immediate offensive cohesion, this existing chemistry is the ultimate “shortcut” to performance.

The “Bridge” Strategy: Sitting Mendoza

Despite the hype surrounding Mendoza, the Raiders’ leadership is prioritizing a developmental cushion.

  1. The Ideal World: Kubiak stated that he prefers a young quarterback not to start Day 1, allowing them to watch a veteran handle the complexities of the NFL.
  2. Current Roster: Before Cousins, Aidan O’Connell was the lone QB in Las Vegas following the trade of Geno Smith to the Jets.
  3. The Prospect: Kubiak and GM John Spytek were recently spotted scouting Mendoza at Indiana’s pro day, further cementing the plan to draft and develop.

The Atlanta Chapter: A Final Resurgence

Cousins arrives in Vegas after a roller-coaster stint with the Atlanta Falcons.

  • The Highs and Lows: After recovery from a torn Achilles and an arm injury in 2024, Cousins was eventually benched for Michael Penix Jr.
  • The Final Stretch: When Penix suffered an ACL tear in 2025, Cousins stepped back into the starting role and finished strong, leading Atlanta to a four-game winning streak to close the season.
  • The Stats: He finished 2025 with a 61.7% completion rate and a 47.6 QBR, proving he still has the “starting-caliber” engine needed to lead a team
